Studentbesøk på Skandi Aker

A slight misunderstanding between the crew on Skandi Aker and DOF Management about the definition of an open day gave 75 students from Vestfold University College an unforgettable day onboard Skandi Aker in Sandefjord.

On Ocotber 19th the maritime students at Vestfold University College arranged their first maritime day at Campus Bakkenteigen in cooperation with the Norwegian Shipowners’ Association. One of the key speakers was HR Director in DOF Lars-Heine Njåstad. He invited the students to visit the ship the following day. Of the 100 students from the bachelor programmes in Navigation, Machinery and Shipping and Logistics that participated in the maritime day 75 visited the ship the following day.
As an introduction the students were taken to the ships cinema and given a brief presentation of the ship and its crew by Captain Nils Andre Hille. And Mr Njåstad was firmly corrected for insinuating that Skandi Aker was a boy – the Captain said that she is definitely a girl – as are all ships. Then Ulf from Aker Solution gave the students an introduction to the ships operations and the possibilities that the ship has. You could hear a pin drop during the presentations as the students were extremely eager to learn more. The students were then divided into several small groups, and guided by amongst others the Chief, the First Officer and the Captain himself, the students were guided around the ship to see and learn about one of the most spectacular ships in the offshore service industry today.
We had promised the Captain that all students would be off the ship by 1500 as they had to prepare for the Aker Solution event that was to start at 1600. Most students managed this, but the last students (and this was the Captains own group) left the boat about 1558… An unforgettable day - and definitely an inspiration for the students. Several of which was ready to start working there and then.
